How Long Does an ASIC Miner Last, and How to Make It Last Longer
A Bitcoin miner can physically run for years after it stops making money. Here's the difference between its physical and its economic lifespan, what wears machines out, and what actually extends both.

With good care, an ASIC miner commonly runs for around five to seven years. But its economic lifespan, how long it earns more than its power costs, is often only two to four years, and depends on hashprice and your power price. Heat, dust, humidity and unstable power wear machines out. Good cooling, clean air, stable power, sensible tuning and fast repairs extend the physical life; cheap power extends the economic life.
"How long will this machine last?" sounds like a simple question. In mining, it has two different answers.
Two lifespans
Physical lifespan is how long the machine keeps running. With good conditions and repairs, many ASICs run for around five to seven years, and some much older models are still hashing today.
Economic lifespan is how long the machine earns more than it costs to run. That's usually shorter, often two to four years, because newer, more efficient machines keep raising the network's difficulty, and every halving cuts the reward. A machine can be in perfect condition and still be uneconomic.
The two are linked: a machine that breaks early never reaches the end of its economic life, and a machine on very cheap power can stay economic long after others are switched off.
What wears a miner out
- Heat. The biggest one. Chips degrade faster when they run hot for long periods, and hot intake air makes everything work harder.
- Fans. The part that fails most often. They run at high speed around the clock.
- Dust. Clogs fans and heatsinks, traps heat and can cause shorts.
- Humidity and condensation. Lead to corrosion on boards and connectors.
- Unstable power. Voltage swings, surges and frequent hard power cuts stress power supplies and boards.
- Overclocking. More hashrate at the cost of more heat and more wear.
- Rough handling. Static discharge and careless shipping damage boards before they ever hash.
Some models also have known weak points. Certain generations have earned reputations for hashboard failures from their thermal design, which is worth checking before buying used machines.
How to extend physical lifespan
- Keep intake air cool and clean. Stay within the manufacturer's temperature range and filter the air.
- Clean on a schedule. Blow out dust and check fans regularly, before problems show up as lost hashrate.
- Control humidity. Avoid condensation, especially in sites that cool down sharply at night.
- Give it stable power. Proper electrical design and surge protection protect power supplies and boards.
- Tune for efficiency, not maximum hashrate. Running slightly below stock frequency at lower voltage reduces heat and wear, and often improves efficiency.
- Consider immersion cooling. Machines submerged in dielectric fluid run at stable temperatures, with no fans and no dust, which removes several of the biggest causes of failure.
- Replace parts early. Swap noisy or slowing fans before they fail, and keep spares on hand.
- Repair fast. A failed chip or board left in a running machine can stress the rest.
- Handle with care. Anti-static precautions and proper packaging every time a machine moves.
How to extend economic lifespan
- Move older machines to cheaper power. A machine that's uneconomic at 7¢ can still earn at 3¢. Check where the break-even sits with our profitability guide.
- Tune for efficiency as hashprice falls, trading some hashrate for lower power use.
- Use curtailment wisely. Switching off during expensive hours can keep an older machine profitable on average.
- Sell at the right time. Used machines lose value as new generations arrive and around each halving. Selling a year early can be worth more than running a year longer.
The bottom line
A well-kept miner can run for years. Whether those years are profitable depends on what you pay for power. Look after the machine to extend its physical life, and put it on the cheapest reliable power you can find to extend its economic life.
