Uptime Management in Bitcoin Mining: How to Keep a Fleet Above 98%
Every hour a miner is offline it earns nothing while it keeps ageing. Here's what the best-run sites do to keep machines hashing, from monitoring and spares to cooling and curtailment.

Uptime is the share of time your machines are actually hashing. The difference between 95% and 99% is real money over a year. High uptime comes from fast detection, fast repairs, good cooling, clean and stable power, and planned maintenance instead of surprises. Measure it per machine, not just per site.
Two identical machines, at the same site, on the same power price, can earn very different amounts over a year. The difference is almost always uptime.
Why uptime matters more than it looks
A machine at 95% uptime is offline for about 18 days a year. At 99%, it's under 4 days. For a fleet of a thousand machines, those two weeks of difference add up to a lot of lost Bitcoin, while the machines keep depreciating and the site's fixed costs keep running.
Uptime also hides inside other numbers. A machine that's "online" but hashing 20% below spec because it's overheating is quietly losing money too.
What actually takes machines offline
- Hardware failures: hashboards, fans and power supplies.
- Heat: machines throttle or shut down when intake air is too hot.
- Dust and humidity: clogged fans and corroded boards.
- Power problems: outages, voltage swings and tripped breakers.
- Network issues: a switch or uplink failure can take a whole row offline.
- Firmware and pool problems: bad settings, failed updates, pool outages.
- Curtailment: planned switch-offs, which should be scheduled, not surprises.
What well-run sites do
Monitor every machine, all the time. A dashboard with hashrate, temperature and status per machine, and alerts when something drops. The faster a failure is noticed, the shorter it lasts.
Keep spares on site. Fans, power supplies and hashboards in stock, so a repair takes an hour, not a shipping week.
Repair on site. A bench, trained technicians and a clear process for swapping, testing and returning machines to the rack.
Manage heat. Enough airflow, hot and cold aisles kept apart, filters cleaned on schedule, and a plan for the hottest weeks of the year. In hot climates, immersion or hydro cooling can protect uptime.
Keep power clean. Proper electrical design, protection against surges, and someone who can reset a tripped breaker quickly.
Plan maintenance. Clean, inspect and update machines on a schedule, a few racks at a time, instead of waiting for them to fail.
Use tuning and automation carefully. Firmware that tunes each machine to its conditions can recover hashrate, and automatic restarts can bring machines back without anyone touching them.
Schedule curtailment. If the site curtails, plan it so machines come back cleanly and the credits are worth it.
What to measure
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Uptime % per machine | How much of the time each machine is hashing |
| Hashrate realization | Actual hashrate compared to the machine's rated hashrate |
| Mean time to repair | How long a failed machine stays offline |
| Failure rate by part | Which components fail most, and when to stock up |
| Reject and stale shares | Network or pool problems |
| Intake temperature | Whether cooling keeps up |
If you use a hosting provider
Ask for their published uptime and the history behind it, how fast failures are detected, whether repairs happen on site, and whether you pay for power while a machine is down. A good provider shows you your machines on a dashboard and lets you see your hashrate in your own pool account.
The bottom line
Uptime isn't luck. It's the result of seeing problems early, fixing them fast and preventing the ones you can predict. A fleet that runs 99% of the time, at full hashrate, can beat a cheaper site that's offline for weeks every year.
