Bitcoin Cash split from Bitcoin on 1 August 2017 over the block-size debate. It raised the block size limit to keep on-chain payments cheap, and keeps Bitcoin's 21 million coin cap.

About

How this coin is mined

Bitcoin Cash split from Bitcoin in August 2017. It runs on the same SHA-256 ASICs and the same halving schedule, so any Bitcoin miner can switch to it in a pool setting.

Questions

Mining this coin: FAQ

Is Bitcoin Cash mining profitable right now?

At 5¢/kWh the most profitable Bitcoin Cash miner today, the Bitmain Antminer S23 Hyd 3U, earns about $44.26 a day and burns $13.22 of electricity, leaving about $31.04 a day. 137 of 248 SHA-256 miners we track are profitable at that price. Set your own power price above and the whole page recalculates.

What is the best miner for Bitcoin Cash?

Ranked by profit per day at 5¢/kWh: Bitmain Antminer S23 Hyd 3U ($31.04/day, 1.16 PH/s at 11,020 W), MicroBT WhatsMiner M79S ($27.51/day, 1.35 PH/s at 20,000 W), Bitdeer SealMiner A4 Ultra Hydro ($23.76/day, 886 TH/s at 8,372 W). The most efficient machine we track is the Bitdeer SealMiner A4 Ultra Hydro at 9.45 J/TH; cheap power favours raw hashrate, expensive power favours efficiency, so the order changes with your price.

At what electricity price does Bitcoin Cash mining stop paying?

At today's price and difficulty the Bitmain Antminer S23 Hyd 3U breaks even at about 17¢ per kWh: above that it costs more to run than it earns. Pool fees (usually 1-4%), cooling and any hosting margin come on top, so plan with a buffer. Of the 248 machines we track, 176 are in profit at 3¢/kWh, 121 at 6¢ and 52 at 10¢, which is why miners chase cheap power.

How long does a Bitcoin Cash miner take to pay for itself?

The fastest payback at 5¢/kWh is the Bitmain Antminer S21 Pro (234Th): about $702.30 for the machine, $4.72 profit a day, so roughly 5 months if price and difficulty stayed where they are today. The top earner, the Bitmain Antminer S23 Hyd 3U, costs $15,499 and pays back in about 16 months. In practice difficulty usually rises as new machines ship, so real payback is longer; a falling coin price stretches it further, a rally shortens it.

How much BCH does one miner make per day?

The Bitmain Antminer S23 Hyd 3U, at 1.16 PH/s, mines about 0.156 BCH a day today, worth $44.26. That is 0.032% of the network's 3.62 EH/s. The whole network mints about 498.2 BCH a day ($140,938), and every miner earns its share of hashrate.

Should I mine Bitcoin Cash solo or in a pool?

On its own, one Bitmain Antminer S23 Hyd 3U would find a Bitcoin Cash block about once every 20 days on average, and luck can stretch that a long way. With blocks this frequent, even a single machine gets regular rewards; pools still smooth the payouts. FPPS and PPS+ pools pay a fixed amount per share (fees often 2-4%), PPLNS pools pay out only when the pool finds a block (often 0-2%, but lumpier).

How do Bitcoin Cash's block rewards and supply work?

Right now each block pays about 3.125 BCH including fees, with a block every 9 minutes on average, about 498.2 BCH a day. 19.98 million of the 21.00 million maximum are already out (95%). The subsidy halved to 3.125 BCH in April 2024, on the same schedule as Bitcoin. Difficulty retargets every block (the ASERT algorithm), so hashrate can move between Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash quickly whenever one pays more.

What hardware mines SHA-256, and what matters when buying?

SHA-256 (hashed twice per attempt) is the most competitive mining market there is, and only ASICs have counted since 2013. The main makers are Bitmain (Antminer), MicroBT (WhatsMiner), Canaan (Avalon) and Bitdeer (SealMiner). Air-cooled units are loud (around 75 dB) and need a lot of airflow; hydro (water-cooled) and immersion models pack more hashrate per rack and last longer in hot climates, but need a cooling loop or tank. Most air-cooled machines run on 200-277 V, many hydro models on 380-415 V three-phase. The same machines mine Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, eCash, Fractal Bitcoin, Peercoin and the SHA-256 sides of DigiByte and Quai: switching is just a pool change. We track 248 SHA-256 machines; judge them by J/TH (efficiency) against your power price, then by price per TH, cooling type and the warranty and repair options where you will run them.

What does a 1 MW Bitcoin Cash mining site earn?

One megawatt of power runs about 90 Bitmain Antminer S23 Hyd 3U units. At 5¢/kWh that is roughly $84,914 a month in profit before pool fees, cooling overhead and staff, for about $1.39M of machines. Site profit is very sensitive to the power price: every 1¢/kWh costs about $7,296 a month at one megawatt. CryptoSites.io lists powered land, container farms and hosting with the power price on every listing.

How do I start mining Bitcoin Cash?

Pick a machine for your power price (see the table above), then sort out power and cooling: most ASICs need 200-277 V at 10-30 A each, hydro models usually 380-415 V three-phase and a cooling loop, and air-cooled units are too loud for a home. Set up a Bitcoin Cash wallet, point the machine at a pool, and watch temperatures in the first days. If you don't have cheap power and space, hosting is the usual route: a host runs the machine for an all-in price per kWh. CryptoSites.io lists both powered sites and hosting.
